Recent research is giving us insight into fasting and how effective and safe it really is. Check out the benefits and the risks of long-term fasting versus intermittent partial day fasting and evening fasting. You may be causing more harm then good if you fast incorrectly. Watch this video for more information on fasting!

A recent study presented at the European Society of Endocrinology meeting found that three months of alternating 24-hours of fasting on one day and eating unrestricted food on the next day caused rats to eat less total food and lose total body fat, but the rats also developed signs of becoming diabetic.

The data showed that extended fasting periods increases free radical production that damages cells that can increase the risk for diabetes.

Intermittent fasting, fasting for less than 24 hours, produces no cell damage and also works for weight loss.

After fasting for more than eight hours, you start to lose body fat because your body is forced to change temporarily from its main energy source of the sugar, glucose, to the fat in your body.

Alternate-day partial fasting has been shown in many studies to help people lose more weight than just restricting calories every day.

Fasting overnight, by avoiding eating in the evening and overnight, is an effective way to lower high blood sugar levels, and high insulin levels, promote weight loss and reduces your chances of heart attacks, strokes, and certain cancers.

If you are thinking about integrating fasting into your life, check with your doctor if you are diabetic, have low blood pressure, take medications, are underweight, have eating disorders, or are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding an infant.

Chiropractor Asheville Drink Water for Heart Health

How Much Water Should We Drink Every Day?

Did you know you get approximately 1 liter (4 cups) of water from a daily consumption of foods like fruits and vegetables as well as water your body makes?

So how much water should you be drinking daily to stay healthy?

In an Adventist Health Study, involving 20,000 men and women, those drinking 5 or more glasses of water a day had about half the risk of dying from heart disease compared to those who drank 2 or fewer glasses daily.

This study may suggest daily water intake lowers blood viscosity (blood thickness).

Taking into account your lifestyle, including a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables and daily moderate exercise at moderate ambient temperature, authorities from Europe, the U.S. Institute of Medicine, and the World Health Organization recommend 2.0 to 2.7 liters (8 to 11 cups) of water a day for women and 2.5 to 3.7 liters (10 to 15 cups) a day for men.

Remember your best source for everything health is your chiropractor.

Visit your chiropractor regularly and make sure your nervous system is functioning at 100%.

Chiropractor Asheville – Get Your Sleep Mojo Back

Get Your Sleep Mojo Back!

Are you struggling with your sleep?  Nothing more annoying then laying in bed staring at the clock.

Sleep is important on many levels.  There is nothing more important for your health than a good nights sleep.  I think we can agree on that.  Sleep can either make you or break you!

Here is the thing.  Sleep is also a barometer of your health.  If you are not sleeping, then you have to ask yourself what is out of balance.  Lack of sleep does not mean that you need more Ambien.  Nor does it mean that you need Melatonin.  Trouble going to sleep, staying to sleep or waking up and feeling like you didn’t sleep at all is your bodies way of telling you that you that something is wrong.  Most people do not realize that sleeping issues could stem from impaired digestion and weak adrenals.  These are things that can be fixed.  So the best way to get your sleep mojo back is to find the true cause of your sleep problem. Once you identify the imbalance you can give your body what it needs and enjoy a full nights sleep without medication.

Here are 4 steps you can take to get you sleep mojo back:

  1. Reduce Your Nervous Tension.  Tension on your nervous system will cause you to be more anxious and will disturb your sleep.  Tension can be from tight muscles and can end up in your neck, shoulders and low back or hips.  Bodywork such as massage or acupuncture are ways that you can release this nervous system tension in your body.

  2. Adrenal Support.  Your adrenal glands are small walnut-sized glands that sit on top of your kidneys.  These glands control your hormones, immune system, your response to stress and your sleep cycle.  There are so many body processes that are controlled by these adrenal glands.  When the adrenal glands are exhausted from stress and lack of support, they are not able to keep up with the demands of the human body.  Poor sleep is one of the tell-tale signs that the adrenal glands are not functioning well.

  3. Proper Spinal Alignment. The central nervous system is the made up of the brain and spinal cord.  This system is encased in bone.  The spinal column wraps around the central nervous system and protects it.  If the posture is out of alignment then the bones can alter the communication from the brain to the body. This misalignment can affect the nerves that go to various organs of the body and can ultimately affect sleep.  Get your spine checked by a chiropractor and keep your spine in proper alignment.

  4. Diet Modifications.  Did you know that serotonin that is released by your brain to put you into a sleep cycle is initially produced by the gut?  Yes.  This means if your gut is not healthy, then your ability to make hormones and chemicals to sleep can be affected.  This is why it is important to adjust your diet to ensure that your gut is healthy and can support natural sleeping.

Chiropractor Asheville – Frozen Shoulder Solutions

Frozen Shoulder Solutions

Frozen shoulder syndrome can be a real drag.  We don’t realize how important this joint is until it “freezes” and we can’t reach around our own body.  Most of the time frozen shoulder is treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections and shoulder surgery.  How effective are these and how do they compare to chiropractic treatment? There may be a better option that helps “thaw” the FREEZE. Watch this video and find out more. Click the Red More Button in your email or the image below if you are on our website.

Chiropractor Asheville – Exercising on Statin Drugs

Exercising on Statin Drugs

Are you having trouble keeping up with your friends on the hiking trails?

It may be the STATINS!

We know statins are used to lower cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease. What many of us don’t know is that statin drugs cause damage to our cells and can affect our ability to exercise.  I just had this conversation with a patient this evening who has noticed decreased stamina when exercising.  He had no idea that his statin may be the culprit.

Statins cause muscle damage and reduced ability to exercise by decreasing the number and function of muscle mitochondria, the energy sources for muscles during exercise. So if statins cause such serious problems what do you do about cholesterol if you can’t take them? Watch this video and find out. It’s much simpler than you think. In this video Asheville Chiropractors, Dr. Nicole Lindsey and Dr. Bryan Gennett talk about having that hunched forward posture, otherwise known as forward head posture in chiropractic language. This posture is becoming increasingly common in adults and children. With more eyes and hands glued to electronics, we find ourselves growing in this forward position. This posture not only looks terrible but can be harmful to your health. In fact, we are seeing more cases of arthritic degeneration in younger spines because of the stress this posture puts on the spine.

If you or your children are showing this posture, visit your chiropractor and begin stretches and exercises to reverse this position.  Let us know if we can help!
