Physical Therapy Q&A

Back In Balance

What is the Purpose of Physical Therapy?

The main purpose of physical therapy is to help injured areas heal and regain strength. Chiropractic adjustments go hand in hand with physical therapy. While a chiropractic adjustment works to restore balance, physical therapy and myofascial triggerpoint therapy are used to increase strength, improve mobility, relieve pain, and restore proper function. With each therapy session, the body increases in strength and mobility. Physical therapy helps a person overcome the effects of a traumatic injury. The healing is gradual and with physical therapy, it is also controlled so the patient does not over do it strain themselves and re-injure the area.

What Types of Exercises are Included in Physical Therapy Sessions?

Many different exercises can be used in a physical therapy program. Stretching, walking, and swimming are easy exercises that will help a person regain their mobility and improve their strength. The person's injury will determine what type of exercises will be used to create their physical therapy program. In the beginning, chiropractic adjustments and triggerpoint massage may also be included. As the person's overall strength continues to increase, their physical therapy treatment plan may need to be altered to accommodate the new level of strength. the goal of physical therapy is to help a person get as close to their original level of strength as absolutely possible.

Can Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy be Used Together?

Chiropractic care and physical therapy can be used in conjunction with one another to provide the best possible results after an injury to the back or other area of the body. Chiropractic care works to make structural corrections to the body and physical therapy helps to strengthen the area in an attempt to improve overall form. When both treatment options are used together, form and function are combined as well. When a person is being treated for a specific injury, it can be difficult for healing to take place if the area is not strong enough to move or function on its own. By including physical therapy exercises, the area is provided the tools to regain its strength as well as its mobility.
